Full Case Study

SHUF

SHUF is a regional theaters tickets and movie trailers app. SHUF aims to create a joyful and easy way for users to watch movie trailers and a comfortable way to book movie theaters tickets, offering various features.

The Problem

Users struggle to book movie tickets in an easy way and look for a better experience and more fun to do so. While a lot of theaters provide one or in most two services, SHUF stands on the users' issues to give them an enjoyable journey with various features.

The Goal

Create an enjoyable and easy-to-use experience to book a ticket using SHUF app.

Research

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was adults who are looking for a joyful movie theaters experience. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about SHUF customers, but research also revealed that users also looking for time consumption when it comes to finding a movie trailer. Other user problems included lack of features and hard times during the movie theaters experience.

Pain Points

Easy To Use

Users struggle and feel frustrated while trying to book a movie in other competitive apps

Time

Users waste a lot of time while searching for a good movie

Accessibility

Most of the users don’t speak English and needs to have Arabic Captions for trailers

Features

If somehow users could book a ticket, they face a lack of features in movie theaters

Personas

Ideation

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and simple way to choose movies to help users to save time.

Iteration

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research. A few steps are what users asked for to book a ticket, using a direct choosing method with direct information and UI would achieve such a goal. Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was booking a movie ticket, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.

Findings

Round 1 Findings

Users need more freedom while moving between screens.

Users need more information about movie theater.

Users to need an easier and more comfortable way to choose time and date.

Round 2 Findings

Users need a landscape option for the seat choosing screen.
More comfortable transactions between screens

Solution

Early designs allowed for some customization, but after the usability studies, I changed the way of displaying movies on the home screen. Horizontal sliding is preferable for users more than vertical. Also after the first usability study, We found that users prefer choosing from the calendar a better way than scrolling in dates and times. After the second usability study, users asked for a wider view in the seat selection screen, such as a full screen or landscape view. Another thing that we found was that users didn’t use the options of Parking and Food from this screen.

Takeaways

Impact

SHUF app sets the needs of its users first, it stands with a solid ground for all kinds of users. The application will make the journey of watching movies and going to theaters more fun and enjoyable.

What I learned

While designing the SHUF app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.
